Nino Brown

Derby Name: Nino Brown
Derby Number: 10₵
What does your derby name mean to you? I was quite ambitious when I started derby. I knew I wanted to be on our Travel Team, New Jax City Rollers, and I had just heard of the movie “New Jack City.” So I considered the connection, said I wanted to make it to the top, and decided to take the name of the head gangsta from the movie, “Nino Brown,” played by Wesley Snipes. Thank god I made it or that name may not have made as much sense! It also holds more personal value between me and my boyfriend cause Nino Brown was mentioned in the hook if one of our favorite summertime hip-hop
songs.
Favorite Position: All of them!! I love the speed of jamming. I love the dynamics of blocking. I love the control as pivot… As with love making, it’s great to have so many to choose from ;)
How you found out about roller derby: I had a drunkin night with Risky Biscuit, of the Rogue Roller Girls in NC and Jonny Longhare of the Magic City Misfits, to thank for that. Biscuit talked it up so big and Jonny gave me the encouragement I needed to think I could do it with NO skating background. Oh yeah, and a conveniently found pair of dumpster skates right before I made my decision!
Date you started with Jacksonville Roller Girls: Late August 2010
Favorite moment during a bout: When you just barely dodge that one huge hit you know would have just obliterated you, and the relief and thrill when that blocker goes careening into the sidelines.
Favorite moment during an after party: When everyone is sufficiently wasted enough to start dancing like they’re alone in their house using anything as microphone!
Favorite after party drink: BEER, almost any beer will do!
Favorite bout you played in: Hard Knox (Knoxville, TN) at their home on August 27th 2011. The points were scary close but we prevailed in the end. It felt like I finally proved myself worthy of my amazing team that night.
What are your favorite skates? Vanilla Brass Knuckles w/ a Labeda ProLine plate.
What are your favorite wheels? Backspin Deluxe
Do you have a derby wife? The beautiful Crash Register #130
What should an opponent know about you before a bout? Matters on what I ate the night before…but you might not want to skate too close behind me. One thing me and my wifey are known for….our gas
What should your fans know about you? Like any roller girl, I love a good chant before a jam starts.

The Jacksonville RollerGirls are hosting a WFTDA Officials Clinic on June 9th & 10th.

The class room instructional portion will be hosted at the Aloft Hotel in Tapestry Park. The class room portion will take place on Saturday, June 9th and part of June 10th.  The skating venue is TBD. Its location will be released as soon as available. That part of the event will take place June 10th.

Flux Decapitat’r

What does your derby name mean to you:  I guess it means I’m a nerdy 80s child, plus I’ll chop your head off.

How you found out about roller derby:  Went to see a bout with some friends and loooved it. About 6 months later, I decided I’d show up to recruitment night.
Date you started with the Jacksonville Roller Girls:  February 2011
Favorite derby moment during a bout:  I didn’t play, but it was so awesome to be part of the April 2011 double-header against Knoxville’s A and B teams at the UNF arena. JRG won both bouts and sooo many fans were there to see it! And I got to see my first Goblynn (Knox skater) crawl, which spooked me in a most spectacular way!
Favorite derby moment during an after party:  Well, there are some specific ones that come to mind, but in general, it’s the dancing…always the dancing (particularly when “Get Low” or “Baby Got Back” comes on).
